Layering system: the onion look for skiing

As soon as the days get colder, onion looks are the order of the day. Even when skiing! The Schöffel Layering System in the ski sector was developed together with ski racing pro Felix Neureuther to provide you with the optimum clothing throughout the ski season. No matter what the conditions, our Schöffel Layering System offers you unsurpassed performance on the slopes throughout the entire ski season.

The onion principle for skiing: Your ski outfit for every weather and every skiing style

The ski season in the Alps starts as early as October and - if the snow cooperates - doesn't end until Easter. During this period, snow is always the basis for your skiing adventure, but apart from that, the weather conditions can vary greatly. The weather can also vary greatly within a ski vacation or even within a day. So how can you dress appropriately for the changeable conditions? The keyword is quite clear: layering! With several layers pulled on top of each other, you can dress and undress quickly if the weather changes. The Schöffel layering system can cope with changing conditions as well as your different activity levels. With a wide range of products that complement each other and can be layered individually, Schöffel offers you an optimum body climate with maximum freedom of movement.

Layering: These layers are part of the ski onion look

The ski onion look is made up of three to five layers:

  • Base layer (Base 1 and 2)
  • Insulation layer (Insulation 1 and 2)
  • Outer layer (shell)

The key to layering is the perfect interaction of the individual layers. That's why we at Schöffel have designed each layer to function both independently and as part of an overall system. Ventilation channels, features and fits have been integrated into each layer so that your outfit is designed for every experience on the slopes.

Your guarantee for comfort and movement

The base layer

The bottom layer of the layering principle is the base layer, which is also known as functional underwear or thermal underwear . The base layer is worn directly on the skin and serves to keep the body warm, wick away moisture and keep the skin dry. The ski underwear therefore makes an optimum contribution to regulating the body climate. As the base layer serves as the first layer of insulation, it is made from fabrics such as merino . By trapping small amounts of air between the wool fibers, it provides pleasant warmth.

In addition to functional underwear, a longsleeve should be worn over the underwear in the base layer. This ensures a pleasantly dry feeling even with high moisture transport. In any case, Schöffel underwear offers you unrestricted freedom of movement and can even help you to improve your performance.

You should pay attention to this with your base layer:

Your base layer should always fit close to your body and be breathable . Depending on the temperature or season, you decide whether your base layer should be long or short. In other words, you can choose whether your first layering layer is short or long. Long sleeves that are close to the skin are also very suitable here. In very cold temperatures, you have the option of wearing functional underwear as a base layer and a longsleeve on top.

The important thing is: the base layer is mandatory!

Your heat source on the slopes

The insulation layer

The insulation layer is worn over the base layer and - as the name suggests - provides additional insulation. Its task is to store heat and protect the body from the cold by insulating the air between the layers. The most important features of the insulation layer are heat retention, breathability, compressibility and light weight. Materials such as down, PrimaLoft® or fleece are used for insulating clothing.

The insulation layer is also divided into two separate layers, which can be used individually or in combination depending on the weather and cold. On warmer days, it is advisable to wear only one insulating layer consisting of a fleece so as not to overheat. If, on the other hand, the temperatures are very low, a second insulation layer should be used in addition to the first fleece insulation layer. This second layer consists of an insulation jacket, which is made from a material such as down or PrimaLoft® to keep the body warm even in the most adverse conditions.

You should pay attention to this with insulation layers 1 and 2:

Which ski clothing you wear for your insulation layer depends on the outside temperatures and your individual feeling of warmth. Lightweight fleece or softshell jackets with wind and water-repellent properties are very popular here. If temperatures are not too cold, a softshell jacket can also be worn as an outer layer. In very cold temperatures, the insulating layer should be made of down or synthetic fibers . Again, you can decide individually which material you want to use.

Tip: On very cold days, it is advisable to combine insulation layers 1 and 2 to keep your body warm. A fleece jacket should be worn as insulation layer 1 and a down jacket as insulation layer 2 on top.

Your barrier against wind and weather

The outer layer (shell)

The outermost layer in the Schöffel layering system is a hard shell jacket. This top layer is waterproof and windproof so that the elements cannot harm you. No matter what the weather and regardless of how cold you feel. It also allows air to circulate , effectively wicking away sweat and preventing moisture from building up. This is made possible by the waterproof and breathable membrane and intelligent design with features such as a snow guard. The hard shell jacket should also fit comfortably over the previous layers, consisting of a base layer and insulation layer, so that optimum freedom of movement is guaranteed. The jacket is equipped with RECCO® reflectors so that you can be found more quickly in emergency situations.

You should pay attention to this with the outer layer:

The outer layer should shield you from all weather influences. Whether rain, snow, sun or wind - the outer layer shields you perfectly. The last layer is also breathable and transports excess heat and moisture to the outside. Hard shell jackets are particularly suitable here. Tip: Before use, you should have your jacket waterproofed with a suitable product .

Important: The shell outer layer is mandatory so that you are optimally equipped for wind and wet conditions.

FAQs about the Schöffel Layering System

In our detailed FAQ section you will find all the important questions about the Schöffel Layering System, so that you can start your next Ich bin raus. ski adventure with the best possible equipment!

You should pay attention to the following properties for the base layer:

  • moisture-wicking, breathable materials
  • Functional underwear made from natural and synthetic fibers
  • Polyester, polypropylene or merino wool

Ideal for the insulation layer:

  • PrimaLoft®
  • down

For the outer layer, warmth and protection:

  • Windproof and waterproof materials
  • GORE-TEX®
  • Softshell materials for freedom of movement and breathability

Start with the base layer, followed by the insulating layer and then the outer layer. You therefore progress from tight-fitting to wide. These other tips will help you to use the Schöffel layering system correctly:

  • Make sure that your ski clothing is not too tight so as not to impair circulation, but also not too loose to prevent heat from escaping.
  • Pay attention to thermal insulation in areas that are particularly susceptible to the cold, such as hands, feet and head. Wear appropriate gloves, socks and a hat.
  • In extremely cold conditions, an extra layer may be useful, such as a light down jacket under your ski jacket.
  • Wear moisture-wicking underwear and socks to keep moisture away from the skin and thus minimize the risk of hypothermia.
  • The great advantage of layering is that you can undress and dress as required. Use this too! If it gets warmer during the activity, you can take off a layer to avoid overheating - if you get cold, you can put a layer back on.

The onion look offers the following advantages:

  • increased insulation due to air entrapment
  • Storage of body heat
  • Adaptation to different temperatures and activity levels

When choosing the size of your ski clothing for the layering look, you should consider the following points:

  1. Fit: The clothing should be neither too tight nor too loose. You should be able to move freely and circulation should not be impaired. Clothing that is too loose can reduce insulation efficiency.
  2. Layers: So that you can layer your clothing, you should keep in mind that the lower layers should not be too bulky so that the outer layer still fits over the base layer and the insulation layer.
  3. Freedom of movement: Your ski clothing and the individual layers must not restrict your movement. Because skiing requires a lot of movement.

You can choose all the layers of your layering outfit in your usual clothing size. The layering system has been designed so that all layers are perfectly coordinated - both functionally and in terms of size.

Our Ski Oufit Finder helps you to find the right ski clothing for every layer. Here you will find clothing for the base layer, the insulation layer and the outer layer. Depending on your needs, you can also expand the layers and add fleece jackets or down vests for extra warmth. Choosing the right ski clothing for each layer depends on the respective function of the layer. Basically, your ski clothing should be comfortable and keep you warm and dry.

Make sure you have the right ski clothing for all weather conditions. Accessorize your ski outfit with additional gadgets such as sunglasses, ski goggles and gloves . Schöffel ski clothing is extremely functional and therefore suitable for all weather conditions. Stay flexible and always adapt your layering look to the weather conditions so that you can enjoy your ski adventure to the full.

When caring for and cleaning your functional clothing, you should always treat the individual items with care so that you can enjoy them for a long time. You can find out how to wash and care for your ski clothing in the corresponding article.
